It turns out that two Dutch designers, Jan Schrijver and Angelique Berkhout who met each other working as free-lancers in 1993 teamed up with another Dutch guy, Peter Steenstra, who had tired of working for IBM. Together they decided to open a clothing store and eventually market their own line of clothes.

On Friday the 13th, August 1993 in Arnhem, the Netherlands, the slogan ‘gsus is coming’ announced the arrival of their new Dutch street-wear shop called “heavens playground”. Initially operating as a point of sale for existing brands, the shop was also used as a distribution point for its own brand “gsus”.

Apparently it was the right time for something new. With the baggy, oversized look dominating the streets, gsus introduced tight retro shirts printed with funky glitter applications and the buying public eagerly accepted gsus into their hearts and wardrobe. Both the product and the story behind the brand was 180 degrees different from the run-of-the-mill fashion stuff and so gsus quickly became known and loved for its non-conformity and uniqueness. Gsus adopted the design philosophy of letting their creative side run free and producing whatever felt good.

The brand name is of course a bit of word-play based on one of the most widely recognized names in the world and the gsus logo . . . a crown of thorns, further emphasized the prickliness of the brand.

Miraculously, within only a few years from the time the first tees were introduced, gsus grew from being sold out of the trunk of a car to an internationally available fashion brand. The collection and brand continue to evolve without losing sight of those early stages of fun and creativity.
